Internet enabled TirtaLog, flood warning system (preliminary information, February 7, 2002)
The new TirtaLog pressure logger with build in modem and Internet client software enables a simple yet powerful flood warning system and automatic data retrieval system. This system is based on the TirtaLog with external differential pressure sensor which provides an accurate water level values. The TirtaLog can be programmed to send e-mail's or upload data to an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server through a local ISP (Internet Service Provider). The e-mail or FTP server can be anywhere in the world making this an ideal configuration for remote locations. There is no need to make expensive and sometimes unreliable long distance calls. The data is transferred over the Internet which makes this a robust system with little investment in hardware.
This system requires very little infrastructure other than an Internet connection (phone line) to the data logger and an account with your local ISP. With a little knowledge of standard Internet protocols you can configure the logger, it only needs to know where to send or store the data and the ISP specific information. The logger can send you periodic e-mail's with an attachment including the water level of the previous days/weeks/months. This data can then simply be viewed with the TirtaLog Data Editor software. Additionally the logger can be set to send alarm e-mail's when the water level rises above a specific level or when it detects a flash flood.
A more sophisticated solution is to let the logger upload the data through the standard FTP protocol to an FTP or web server. This data could then be invoked into a web site so that users have immediate access to the water level data. It is also possible to make a direct call to the logger so that the data can be retrieved or the logger can be remotely reconfigured. Please contact Hope Hydrology for customization options.
The logger itself is battery backed and will continue recording data without line power. The modem requires external power which can provide by normal line power or alternative power sources.
A more simple approach could be a direct connection between your computer and the logger either through a wireline or wireless connection as is displayed in the drawing below. This only requires the standard Tirtalog software for downloading data and controlling the data loggers.
